Lose Weight by Running
You can lose weight by running, or gain strength or develop endurance. I used to run a lot as a kid. The pain got to the point where I finally gave it up in favor of cycling. My wife runs. She watched me run a few years ago and commented that I wouldn’t have so much pain if I knew how to run. WHAT? Is running not just putting one foot in front of the other? Not even close! Good. Now I see how all these people running all over the place can do it.
Here is what I have learned. - Like any other activity running burns calories. You can run for strength, endurance or weight loss depending on where you get your heart rate. Wear a heart rate monitor and know what you want. If you are running for weight loss don’t red line it.
- Wear the right shoes. Not any shoes will do. Go to someone who knows hot to fit the shoes. Shoes will dramatically affect how your feet hit the pavement, the angle of your knees, all that mechanical stuff that is important. Most folks around here go to the
running room.
- Improper gait will hurt you. If you put your feet too far forward you will jar your knees. Here are
some good tips
on the technical part of running. World class runners use the same cadence (steps per minute) whether they are running fast or slow. They will run at 90 steps per minute whether they are running to the corner store to get milk or running a marathon. In the marathon they are just taking bigger steps.
- Run a program. Understand how to start running. Like a
super set
you start light and work up to heavy. Here is a
typical running program for beginners.
As you can see running is a little more involved. The beginner programs like the one I have just linked to are good (three times a week, starting at a few minutes a day of running to week 12 that has almost an hour of running).
