Cycling Knee Pain

Cycling Knee Pain can affect any rider!

My wife experiences pain on her bike, yet she is a long distance runner and has no problem at all! My local bike shop experts claim that cycling should be painless and the running would be more likely to cause discomfort.

Discomfort and injury can result from misalignment of the leg.

  • The foot, knee and hip (as one is looking at you head on) should be straight and naturally aligned as if, say, you were lying on your back with your feet pressed squarely against the wall. Knees canted in or out is a problem. Feet angled in or out is a problem.

  • The forward movement of the knee must not be greater than the forward movement of the ball of the foot. If the foot is moving ahead of the knee then undo stress and strain is placed on the knee joint

These alignments can pretty much be eye-balled. Adjust seat height and forward/rear position to make the necessary adjustments.

This will suffice for most Sunday afternoon riders.

If your visual check seems okay and you still experience discomfort it is time to go see your doctor and/or physiotherapist.

You may have an injury that requires attention other than fitting of your bicycle.

If you have had things checked out and you are okay you may need fitting that is more in depth than what is shown on my website. Here are a couple of good sites to check out for fitting of your cycle.
